Knossos

The Minoan Palace of Knossos is 5km southeast of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Kairatos. The first settlement at Knossos dating to the Neolithic Age. The economic, social and political development of this settlement, led at the end of the second millennium BC, to the construction of the majestic palace of Knossos. Knossos was the seat of the legendary King Minos and the main power center in Crete. The palace of Knossos is a symbol of the Minoan civilization in terms of construction, use of luxury materials, architectural design, advanced building techniques and impressive size.

Festos

The Minoan Palace of Faestos was the second most important city of Crete in the second millennium BC after Knossos; and nowadays it constitutes a great archeological site. Located on a low hill and only 62km south west of Heraklion, it is surrounded by the Psiloritis, Asterousia and the Lasithi mountains, only a few miles away from Tibaki. It constituted an economic, administrative and religious centre which supervised the fertile plain of Messara. The old ports of Matala and Kommos were also under the supervision of Phaestos.

Chania

Chania is the site of the Minoan settlement based on which the Minoans built Kydonia. Based on archaeological evidence it has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. After the Minoan Period the city constituted an importance city-state.The city of Chania is divided in two parts: the modern city and the old town which is situated next to the old harbor. It used to be surrounded by the old Venetian walls that started to be built in 1538. Although it has been burnt and bombed several times in the past, Chania's Old Town is considered to be the most beautiful urban district on Crete.

Spinalonga

Spinalonga is a small island near Elounda, in north-eastern Crete. From 1903-1957 Spinalonga constituted a location where lepers from all over Greece were isolated. It was not until the 1970s that the island’s restoration began. Today, the unoccupied island is a popular tourist attraction which can be easily accessed from Elounda, Agios Nikolaos and Plaka.

Vai - Palm Forest

Vai is located in the eastern part of the prefecture of Lasithi and it is the largest and most popular natural palm forest in Europe. The beautiful Palm Beach attracts thousands of visitors every year. There is also a small wetland in the palm forest and both constitute protected and preserved areas.
